Acclaimed filmmaker Darren Aronofsky and bestselling author and screenwriter Gillian Flynn are developing a new untitled erotic thriller for Sony Pictures, marking the continuation of Aronofsky’s partnership with the studio following the recent release of his crime drama Caught Stealing.
The project was first reported by Deadline and is already generating strong industry interest. While plot details remain tightly under wraps, the collaboration brings together two of the most distinctive creative voices in contemporary cinema and storytelling — Aronofsky, known for visually provocative psychological dramas, and Flynn, celebrated for her dark, tense, character-driven thrillers.
Flynn will write the screenplay for the film. She is best known for her bestselling novel Gone Girl, the adaptation of which earned her a Golden Globe nomination, and her work on HBO’s Sharp Objects, which earned an Emmy nomination. She is currently writing the script for Warner Bros.’ reimagining of Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman, directed by Tim Burton.
Aronofsky, who will produce the project through Protozoa Pictures, is one of the most influential filmmakers in the psychological and thriller genres, recognized for films including Black Swan, Requiem for a Dream, The Wrestler, Mother!, and The Whale.
He continues his collaboration with Sony following the August release of Caught Stealing, produced under Columbia Pictures. That film starred Austin Butler as a former baseball hopeful whose life spirals into criminal chaos, alongside a notable ensemble cast including Regina King, Zoë Kravitz, Matt Smith, Liev Schreiber, and Vincent D’Onofrio.
Erotic thrillers have seen a resurgence in Hollywood, and the pairing of Flynn’s sharp psychological insight with Aronofsky’s intense, stylized cinematic approach positions the film to be a standout entry in the genre.
Industry analysts note that the combination of talent — along with Sony’s long-term investment in high-profile auteur projects — signals the studio’s confidence in developing boundary-pushing theatrical storytelling. Although no casting, production dates, or release timeline have been announced, anticipation is high within film communities and among fans of both creators.
Flynn is represented by WME, Blue Marble Management, and Jackoway Austen Tyerman Wertheimer Mandelbaum Morris Bernstein Trattner Auerbach Hynick Jaime LeVine Sample & Klein.
Aronofsky is represented by CAA and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman, Smelkinson & Christopher.
As development progresses, Sony is expected to release further details on casting and plot direction in the coming months.
