Hollywood stars are mourning the loss of actor Eric Dane, best known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy. Dane passed away at the age of 53 on Thursday, following a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which he was diagnosed with in April 2025.
Actor Ashton Kutcher, who starred alongside Dane in the 2010 romantic comedy Valentine’s Day, shared a heartfelt message on X.
“The Franklin strip fanatics fantasy football league will miss Mr. Eric Dane. We know you’ll be watching from the booth. Miss you, buddy. Let’s keep fighting the fight to solve ALS.”
Kutcher’s tribute highlighted both their friendship and Dane’s advocacy for ALS awareness.
Alyssa Milano, who worked with Dane on Charmed, remembered his humor and warmth.
“He had a razor-sharp sense of humor. He loved the absurdity of things. He loved catching people off guard. The spark. The mischief. The tenderness he kept guarded but never totally hidden.”
Milano expressed her condolences to Dane’s loved ones, calling him a man who left a lasting impression on everyone he worked with.
Comedian and actor Martin Lawrence also honored Dane, sharing photos from the set of Bad Boys: Ride or Die in 2024.
“My condolences go out to the family of @realericdane. Solid brotha, true professional, and brought that presence every single time.”
Journalist and author Maria Shriver reflected on Dane’s courage in facing ALS. She revealed that his memoir, Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments, will be published later this year under her imprint, The Open Field at Penguin Random House.
“He was so heroic the way he handled his diagnosis. He used his voice to let the world know what it was like living with ALS. He wanted his family to know how much he loved them, and he wanted to leave them a story they could be proud of.”
Eric Dane is survived by his estranged wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, and their daughters Billie, 15, and Georgia, 14. Gayheart had filed for divorce in 2018 but requested a dismissal in March 2025 after Dane’s diagnosis. Dane’s legacy spans television, film, and advocacy. From his iconic role on Grey’s Anatomy to his openness about living with ALS, he leaves behind a powerful story of resilience, humor, and love.
