ABC’s gamble to cast TikTok star Taylor Frankie Paul as the lead in The Bachelorette has backfired spectacularly. Just days before the premiere of Season 22, the network pulled the plug following the resurfacing of troubling domestic violence footage from 2023. The decision marks the first time in the franchise’s 24-year history that a season has been canceled before airing.
Paul, known for her role in Hulu’s Secret Lives of Mormon Wives (SLOMW), was the first Bachelorette not chosen from the Bachelor Nation pool. With more than six million TikTok followers, ABC hoped her notoriety would revitalize the franchise. Her “messy” reputation, stemming from her divorce and revelations about “soft-swinging” within her Mormon circle, had already made her a polarizing figure.
The cancellation followed leaked footage showing Paul allegedly attacking her ex-boyfriend, Dakota Mortensen, while her daughter was present. Disney Entertainment Television quickly announced the season would not move forward, citing family safety concerns. Mortensen has since been granted temporary custody of their son. The incident reignited scrutiny of ABC’s vetting process and raised questions about why Paul was cast despite her history.
The backlash was swift. Cinnabon terminated its promotional partnership with The Bachelorette and SLOMW, while Paul’s scheduled appearance on The Tonight Show was canceled. Industry insiders described the casting as a “Hail Mary” attempt to revive declining ratings, but experts now call it a costly misstep. Legal analysts estimate the fallout could reach eight figures in losses for Disney and Warner Bros Television.
The Bachelor franchise has faced multiple PR challenges in recent years, and this latest controversy deepens uncertainty about its future. While SLOMW had been a hit for Hulu and Disney, its fifth season is now on pause. ABC’s decision underscores the tension between entertainment value and responsibility in reality TV casting.
Experts argue the incident highlights the risks of prioritizing social media fame over thorough vetting. “They just got it wrong,” said psychologist Jo Hemmings, noting that Paul’s troubling history should have disqualified her. For Disney, pulling the season may have been the only option to protect its family-friendly brand, but the damage to The Bachelorette is undeniable.
