Global K-pop superstar and actor Lisa from Blackpink is set to make a powerful return to the screen. Netflix confirmed on Thursday that she will star in Tygo, an action-thriller expanding the universe of the blockbuster Extraction franchise. The film also features acclaimed Korean action star Don Lee (Eternals, Train to Busan) and Squid Game actor Lee Jin-uk.
The project marks a significant milestone for Lisa as she steps into her first-ever major film role. Expressing excitement about the project, she said, “I’m so honored to be a part of this project and grateful for the opportunity to work alongside such incredible actors. Being in an action film has always been a dream of mine, and for my first movie role to be in such an exciting action film is a dream come true.”
Directed by Lee Sang-yong, Tygo follows the story of a former child soldier seeking revenge against Korea’s underworld after a mission goes disastrously wrong. The film promises intense choreography and high-adrenaline action sequences, expanding the gritty storytelling that fans associate with the Extraction series.
According to Angela Russo-Otstot, Chief Creative Officer of AGBO, the team is excited to bring a uniquely Korean perspective into the established franchise. “We’re thrilled to explore the world of Extraction through a South Korean lens, teaming up with legendary action star Don Lee and visionary director Lee Sang-yong, whose dynamic choreography exemplifies the world-class craft of Korean cinema,” she said.
The Extraction universe originated from Ciudad, a graphic novel by Anthony and Joe Russo with Ande Parks. With Chris Hemsworth leading the original films, Extraction (2020) and Extraction 2 (2023) became major global hits on Netflix, with the first film watched by more than 90 million households in its opening month.
The new lineup of Extraction projects includes actors Omar Sy, Boyd Holbrook, and Natalie Dormer, signaling Netflix’s ambition to build a globally interconnected action franchise.
“Tygo brings a distinctly Korean identity into the global Extraction universe. We can’t wait to unleash its explosive energy on audiences worldwide,” director Lee said.
Tygo will mark Lisa’s second acting role, following her performance as Mook in the HBO hit series The White Lotus earlier this year. Her entry into major action cinema is expected to attract international audiences, especially her massive global fanbase.
With rising star power, a proven franchise, and powerhouse Korean filmmakers, Tygo is already one of the most anticipated action releases for Netflix viewers internationally. The release date is expected to be announced soon.
