The Phoenix Suns claimed an impressive 125-108 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday night, but the win came with concern after star guard Devin Booker exited early due to a right groin injury. Booker played just under 10 minutes before heading to the locker room and was officially ruled out for the remainder of the game, leaving fans and teammates anxious about his condition and recovery timeline.
Booker opened strong, scoring 11 points in the first quarter while adding three assists and two rebounds. His early offensive rhythm helped the Suns establish pace, but with just over two minutes left in the first quarter, he checked out and did not return. The Suns did not specify the injury moment, but confirmed that the guard was dealing with groin discomfort.
The issue is particularly concerning due to his history: this is now the third December in four years that Booker has experienced a groin injury. Last season he missed 20 games in December, and the season prior he sat out five games with a similar strain. Booker entered Monday’s matchup averaging 25.7 points, 6.9 assists and 4.4 rebounds, playing a critical role in the Suns’ offensive system.
Despite the unexpected setback, the Suns showed remarkable depth. Dillon Brooks took control offensively and delivered a dominant performance with 33 points, attacking aggressively and hitting timely shots throughout the night. Meanwhile, Collin Gillespie recorded a breakout performance, sinking eight three-pointers and finishing with 28 points, the best game of his young career.
The Suns shifted momentum decisively in the second quarter, closing the half with a 19-4 run that pushed them to a double-digit lead. They maintained control in the second half behind improved ball movement, aggressive defense, and efficient perimeter shooting.
On the Lakers’ side, Luka Dončić once again led the way with a strong performance, recording 38 points, 11 rebounds and five assists. However, it wasn’t enough to overcome Phoenix’s offensive firepower and defensive pressure.
Austin Reaves added 16 points, while LeBron James, playing just his fifth game back after managing a sciatica injury, scored 11 points on 3-of-10 shooting. His long-running streak of double-digit scoring nearly ended, but he secured the necessary final basket before being subbed out.
Turnovers and defensive lapses proved costly for the Lakers, who were out-paced in transition and out-shot from beyond the arc.
The Suns next face the Houston Rockets on Friday, potentially without Booker as he begins evaluation and treatment. Phoenix will rely heavily on Brooks, Gillespie and role-player depth to maintain momentum while monitoring their franchise star’s recovery progress.
With a challenging stretch ahead, Booker’s health could significantly influence the Suns’ season trajectory.
