Bowen Yang has broken his silence about leaving Saturday Night Live, one day before his final appearance on the long-running NBC sketch series. Yang confirmed the exit—and reflected lovingly on his years at Studio 8H—in an emotional Instagram post shared Saturday ahead of Season 51’s December 20 episode. The announcement surprised fans who have come to associate the comedian’s bold characters and quick wit with modern SNL. Yang’s departure joins a string of cast exits this season, marking another cast transition for the historic series.
Yang shared a carousel of behind-the-scenes SNL photos and videos. In the caption, he recalled why working at 30 Rockefeller Plaza mattered deeply to him during turbulent times.
“I loved working at SNL, and most of all, I loved the people,” he wrote. He credited the experience with teaching him to show up with purpose: “Working at 30 Rock taught me the value in showing up anyway when people make it worthwhile.”
Yang joked about being “bad with wigs” and praised coworkers as “generous, vulnerable, hot.” He described mistakes and failures as critical parts of live comedy and emphasized that sketches succeed only after repeated attempts: “Comedy is mostly logistics and it will usually fail until it doesn’t.”
Yang joined SNL as a writer in 2018 and became a feature player the next year. He was promoted to repertory cast member for Season 47. His tenure included five Emmy nominations—four for performing and one for writing—making him a standout in the current cast. Yang is also the first Asian performer and one of the few LGBTQ+ cast members in the show’s history.
His characters, digital shorts and sharp improv instincts helped anchor major sketches and viral online moments, earning him a passionate fan following.
In his message, Yang thanked executive producer Lorne Michaels for the opportunity and for building a creative environment defined by shared standards. “They all care deeply about people in the room enjoying themselves,” Yang wrote. “I can’t believe I was ever included in that.”
He ended his post with a nod to Michaels’ famous mantra: “The show doesn’t go on because it’s ready, but sh****t, I hope I am.”
Yang’s last show will be hosted by his Wicked co-star Ariana Grande, with Cher as musical guest—a farewell pairing that fans have described as iconic. He previously needed scheduling permission from Michaels to participate in the Wicked films, signaling his career’s expansion outside Studio 8H.
Yang’s post notes he looks forward to the next chapter. His recent roles include Fire Island, Dicks: The Musical, the new remake of The Wedding Banquet, and an upcoming film with longtime collaborator Matt Rogers. While fans expressed sadness at the exit, many celebrated his growth and legacy at SNL. His departure underscores a season of change, positioning Yang for broader creative opportunities beyond live weekly sketch comedy.
