The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City community is mourning the loss of Mary Cosby’s son, Robert Cosby Jr., who died in Utah on February 23 at the age of 23. Authorities confirmed his death after responding to a medical emergency, with reports citing a possible overdose.
At the 37th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles on March 5, Brooks Marks — son of RHOSLC star Meredith Marks — offered heartfelt condolences to Mary. “My heart goes out to the Cosby family,” Brooks told PEOPLE. “He really was such an incredible person. It’s really a devastating, devastating situation.”
Two days after Robert’s passing, Mary and her husband Robert Cosby Sr. released a statement: “Our beloved son Robert Jr. has been called home to the Lord. Though our hearts ache, we take comfort in God’s promise and in knowing he is finally at peace.”
They thanked fans for their prayers and support during this time of sorrow.
Bravo also issued a statement, saying the network was “heartbroken” and sending love to Mary and her family. Executive producer Andy Cohen echoed the sentiment, writing on Threads: “This is every parent’s worst nightmare. My heart is broken for Mary, and I am sending all my love to her and Robert Sr.”
On February 28, Mary shared an emotional Instagram post featuring a throwback photo of herself with Robert as a child. She wrote, “I’m going to miss you bubs ❤️🙏😢,” setting the tribute to Jessica Mauboy’s cover of Time After Time.
Robert Jr. had previously opened up about his struggles with addiction and suicidal ideation during season 5 of RHOSLC. He revealed he began using prescription drugs at 16 and later experimented with opioids and heroin. Despite completing rehab in 2024, he continued to battle challenges with substance abuse. His candid conversation with Mary on the show highlighted the depth of his struggles and the strength of their bond. “You’re the only reason I didn’t kill myself,” he told her at the time.
