Catherine O’Hara Remembered: Hollywood Pays Tribute to Comedy Icon

Canadian actress Catherine O’Hara, beloved for her sharp wit and unforgettable performances, has died at the age of 71. Her agent confirmed she passed away on Friday at her Los Angeles home following a brief illness. O’Hara leaves behind a legacy spanning decades, from cult classics like Beetlejuice and Home Alone to her award-winning role as Moira Rose in Schitt’s Creek.

Tributes from Hollywood

Meryl Streep, who worked with O’Hara in Heartburn, praised her “love and light” and compassion for the eccentric characters she portrayed. Pedro Pascal, her co-star in The Last of Us, said he was “eternally grateful” to have shared the screen with her.

Ben Stiller called her “unmatched in comedy,” while Michael Keaton, her Beetlejuice co-star, described her as a “true friend” whose loss “hurts deeply.” Alec Baldwin remembered her as “one of the greatest comic talents in the movie business.”

Macaulay Culkin, who played her son in Home Alone, shared a heartfelt message on Instagram: “Mama. I thought we had time. I wanted more. I love you. I’ll see you later.”

A Career of Comic Brilliance

O’Hara began her career in Canada’s comedy scene before breaking into Hollywood with a string of acclaimed performances. Her role as Moira Rose in Schitt’s Creek earned her a Golden Globe in 2021 and cemented her as a modern comedy legend.

She was recently nominated for her portrayal of Patty Leigh in Seth Rogen’s satirical series The Studio, and remains a contender at the upcoming Actor Awards. Rogen recalled telling her she was “the funniest person” he had ever watched on screen.

Christopher Guest, who collaborated with O’Hara on several films, hailed her as “one of the comic giants of our age.” Fellow Canadian Mike Myers called her passing “a very sad day for comedy and for Canada.”

National Mourning

Tributes extended beyond Hollywood. Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau described her as a “beloved Canadian icon,” while current leader Mark Carney said the country had “lost a legend.”

O’Hara is survived by her husband, production designer Bo Welch, their sons Matthew and Luke, and six siblings. Her career, marked by fearless humor and heartfelt performances, leaves an indelible mark on comedy and film.
