Chappell Roan Defends Bold Grammy Dress: “It’s Not That Outrageous”

Chappell Roan made headlines at the 2026 Grammy Awards with a daring Mugler ensemble that sparked conversation across social media. The Good Luck, Babe! singer, born Kayleigh Amstutz, arrived at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles wearing a custom-made dress and cape draped from nipple rings — a look that quickly divided opinion online.

Roan Responds to Criticism

Taking to Instagram the following night, Roan dismissed the controversy surrounding her outfit. “Giggling because I don’t even think this is THAT outrageous of an outfit,” she wrote. “The look’s actually so awesome and weird. I recommend just exercising your free will — it’s really fun and silly.” Her playful response highlighted her confidence in embracing unconventional fashion choices, a hallmark of her rising pop career.

A Grammy Presenter Role

Roan served as a presenter during the ceremony, awarding Best New Artist to Olivia Dean. For the main event, she swapped her headline-making Mugler look for a tan chiffon Grecian-style gown, showcasing her versatility on the red carpet.

“Thank you for having me @grammys and those who voted for me!!” the 27-year-old performer added in her Instagram post.

Behind the Outfit

Fashion stylist Genesis Webb revealed that Mugler designer Miguel Castro Freitas created the outfit, drawing inspiration from Manfred Thierry Mugler’s spring-summer 1998 couture collection. Webb clarified that Roan’s look included prosthetic nipple pasties and faux tattoos, crafted by makeup artist Sasha Glasser. “This isn’t casual. They’re prosthetics, don’t take it down!!” she explained, defending the artistry behind the design.

Grammy Nominations

Roan was nominated for Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for her single The Subway. Although she did not take home an award, her bold fashion statement ensured she remained one of the night’s most talked-about stars. Her unapologetic stance reflects a growing trend of artists using the Grammys red carpet as a platform for self-expression, pushing boundaries in both music and style.
