The Grey’s Anatomy family continues to mourn the loss of Eric Dane, best known for his role as Dr. Mark “McSteamy” Sloan. Dane died at age 53 following an ALS diagnosis last year, leaving behind a legacy of memorable performances and deep friendships.
Chyler Leigh, who played Lexie Grey opposite Dane from 2007 to 2012, shared a heartfelt statement about her former co-star. “Eric had a heart of gold. His humor and, especially, his laugh was infectious,” she said. Leigh described him as a deeply intelligent man who loved philosophical conversations, a devoted father who adored his daughters, and a passionate artist.
“The Universe is undoubtedly holding Eric now, just as I will continue to do within my heart forever,” she added.
Dane first appeared on Grey’s Anatomy in Season 2 as a guest star before becoming a series regular. His character, Mark Sloan, quickly became a fan favorite for his charm and charisma. Sloan’s romance with Lexie Grey was one of the show’s most beloved storylines, ending tragically when both characters died in a plane crash during Season 8. Their legacy lived on as Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital was renamed Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital in their memory.
Dane’s career extended beyond the medical drama. He starred in HBO’s Euphoria and appeared in numerous films and television projects. His colleagues and fans have remembered him not only for his talent but also for his kindness and generosity.
Leigh’s tribute echoes the sentiments of many in Hollywood who admired Dane’s artistry and humanity. His passing is a reminder of the profound impact actors can have both on-screen and in the lives of those they work with.
