Connors State College is mourning the death of sophomore basketball player Ethan Dietz, who passed away after suffering an injury during a game in Texas. The school confirmed his death in a Facebook statement, calling the incident a devastating loss for the team and campus community.
Dietz was hospitalized following the injury and died on the morning of November 25.
The college has not released specific details about the nature of the injury. A spokesperson told CBS News that it appeared to be “some kind of head injury,” but no further information has been made public.
“As you know, sophomore Ethan Dietz was injured during a men’s basketball game on Saturday,” the school wrote. “He passed away this morning. Ethan exemplified what it means to be a Cowboy — valuing hard work and being part of a team.”
The statement added that the team and campus community are “processing our own grief,” while extending condolences to Dietz’s family and friends.
Dietz, a member of the class of 2024, was a 6-foot-8 forward originally from Vilonia, Arkansas. According to the school’s athletics website, he averaged eight points per game across eight appearances this season.
In his final game against Grayson College, Dietz recorded six points and four rebounds before the injury occurred.
He was known among teammates and coaches for his work ethic, dedication, and positive presence on and off the court.
A vigil for Dietz will take place on December 1 at the Connors State College campus in Warner, Oklahoma. Students, faculty, teammates, and community members are expected to gather to remember the young athlete and support his grieving family.
The exact circumstances surrounding Dietz’s injury remain under review. School officials have not indicated when additional information may be released. For now, the focus remains on honoring Dietz’s legacy and supporting those affected by his sudden passing.
