Cultpix Expands Beyond Streaming With Blu-ray Label, Archive Partnerships

Stockholm-based streaming platform Cultpix is moving into physical media, announcing the launch of a Blu-ray label in partnership with several national film institutes. The expansion marks a significant step for the cult and exploitation cinema service, which has built its reputation on rare and restored titles.

Launch at Cannes

The Blu-ray label will debut at the Cannes Film Festival in May with four restored films from partner archives:

  • Meteo (1990) from the National Film Institute Hungary
  • Fantasy of the Deer Warrior (1961) from the Taiwan Film & Audiovisual Institute
  • The Man from the First Century (1962) from Národní filmový archiv in Prague
  • Madness (1968) from the Estonian Film Institute

“Meteo” will be the first release, with the others rolling out monthly. Later in the year, Cultpix plans to release Taiwan’s Dragon Superman trilogy from 1968.

Expanding Partnerships

Cultpix already collaborates with 11 national film institutes and archives for its streaming service. The Blu-ray venture strengthens those ties while extending the company’s reach into home video. CEO Rickard Gramfors explained that the move was driven by audience demand:

“Our expansion into Blu-ray comes from years of understanding exactly which titles connect with global audiences. These aren’t just catalogue titles – they’re genuine discoveries that our audience has told us they want to own.”

Following Klubb Super 8’s Path

The strategy mirrors that of Swedish sister company Klubb Super 8, which has operated a Blu-ray label for more than 25 years. Klubb Super 8 relaunched its label at Cannes in 2025 with The Year of Christina Lindberg and has since released a dozen titles, including Swedish-Japanese co-productions.

Multi-Platform Distribution

Beyond Blu-ray, Cultpix plans theatrical screenings of titles from its catalog, creating a multi-platform distribution model. The company will present its expanded slate at Berlin’s European Film Market, where executives aim to secure additional content for both digital and physical channels. With its blend of streaming insights and archival partnerships, Cultpix is positioning itself as a key player in preserving and distributing cult cinema worldwide.
