Cyclone Threat Looms Over West Bengal Ahead of Kali Puja, Heavy Rains Likely in South Bengal

As Kali Puja approaches, there is a looming threat of a cyclone over the state of West Bengal. Many places in Kolkata and South Bengal could face flooding before Diwali. According to the Alipore Meteorological Department, a cyclone is likely to form in the coming days. Meteorologist Saurish Banerjee reports that currently, a cyclonic circulation is positioned near the Andaman Sea. In the next 24 hours, this system may intensify into a low-pressure area. After that, it is expected to transform into a cyclone near the east-central Bay of Bengal and the northern Andaman Sea. The system will then move westwards toward the northwest Andaman Sea. By the 22nd of this month, it is expected to intensify into a deep depression in the east-central Bay of Bengal. On the 23rd, it could intensify into a cyclone and move towards the northwest Bay of Bengal. Winds are expected to reach speeds of 110 to 120 kilometers per hour over the sea, according to the report.

Meteorologists have stated that the cyclonic circulation currently near the Andaman Sea will turn into a low-pressure area within 24 hours. By the 22nd, this low pressure could develop into a deep depression. By the 23rd, it is expected to further intensify into a cyclone in the east-central Bay of Bengal. On the morning of the 24th, the cyclone is likely to approach the West Bengal and Odisha coasts. The Alipore Meteorological Department reports that while it is currently in its early stages, it is expected to intensify into a low-pressure system in the next 24 hours, with a general movement towards the northwest. By the 23rd, this system could strengthen into a cyclone.

However, the Alipore Meteorological Department has stated that there is not much chance of rain in South Bengal on Monday. Some districts of South Bengal may experience moderate to heavy rain on Tuesday. On Wednesday, heavy rain is expected in both North and South 24 Parganas, as well as in East and West Midnapore. On Thursday, heavy rain is predicted in Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, and Jhargram. From Friday onward, there is a likelihood of heavy to very heavy rain in Kolkata and coastal districts. Additionally, the sea will be rough starting Monday. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea from the 23rd to the 26th due to rough sea conditions.
