Donald Trump’s Iran Remarks Overshadow Lionel Messi’s White House Visit

Key Points

  • A March 5 White House ceremony honoring Lionel Messi and Inter Miami’s 2025 MLS Cup victory took an unexpected turn.
  • President Donald Trump used the event to boast about U.S. military operations against Iran, dubbed Operation Epic Fury.
  • Players, including Messi, Luis Suárez, and coach Javier Mascherano, appeared visibly uncomfortable during the remarks.
  • Trump later pivoted to soccer, declaring it a “privilege” to welcome Messi to the White House.
  • Inter Miami owner Jorge Mas presented Trump with a team jersey emblazoned with “Trump” and the number 47.

Ceremony Takes a Political Turn

What was meant to be a celebratory event for Inter Miami’s MLS Cup victory quickly shifted focus when President Trump launched into a detailed account of U.S. military actions against Iran.

“The United States military, together with the wonderful Israeli partners, continues to totally demolish the enemy far ahead of schedule,” Trump said, describing the campaign as unprecedented in scale.

The operation, which Iran claims has killed 1,200 people, was justified by Trump as a preemptive strike. “We had really no choice… We blew up their party,” he added, insisting Iranian officials were now seeking negotiations.

Players React

As Trump spoke, Inter Miami players stood behind him, with several—including Messi and Suárez—appearing uneasy. The team had entered the room moments earlier alongside Trump, expecting a celebration of their championship win.

From War to Soccer

After brief remarks on the economy and Cuba, Trump shifted back to the occasion, highlighting Messi’s presence. “It’s my distinct privilege to say what no American president has ever had the chance to say before. Welcome to the White House, Lionel Messi,” he declared.

Trump also referenced Cristiano Ronaldo before concluding: “It’s an honor for us and everybody at the White House to be honoring you today.”

Symbolic Gesture

To mark the occasion, Inter Miami owner Jorge Mas presented Trump with a pink team jersey featuring his name and the number 47, symbolizing his current presidential term.

Context: A Clash of Worlds

The juxtaposition of military rhetoric with a sports celebration highlighted the unusual nature of the event. While Messi’s visit was historic—his first time at the White House—the ceremony underscored how political messaging can overshadow cultural milestones.

What Happens Next?

Inter Miami continues its preparations for the upcoming MLS season, while Messi’s White House appearance will likely be remembered less for the team’s victory and more for the political overtones that dominated the ceremony.
