Donny and Marie Osmond: Inside Their Bond With Seven Brothers

Donny and Marie Osmond rose to fame in 1976 with their hit variety show Donny & Marie. But before becoming household names, the siblings grew up in Utah as part of a large family with seven brothers: Virl, Tom, Alan, Wayne, Merrill, Jay, and Jimmy. Raised by George Virl Osmond and Olive May, the Osmonds were deeply rooted in their faith and community, even building homes next to each other on “Osmond Lane.”

The Osmonds Band

Alan, Wayne, Merrill, and Jay first performed as a barbershop quartet on The Andy Williams Show. Donny joined at age 5, and together they became The Osmonds, a pop group that skyrocketed to fame in the 1970s. Their harmonies and energetic performances won over millions of fans, though the brothers admitted the pressure to be “perfect” weighed heavily on them. Alan, the eldest performing brother, was considered the leader and earned the nickname “No. 1.”

Virl and Tom’s Contributions

The two eldest brothers, Virl and Tom, were born almost completely deaf. Despite this, they played an important role in the family’s musical journey. Virl taught his siblings to tap dance, while Tom learned piano by feeling vibrations. Both also played the saxophone, proving that their disabilities did not limit their creativity. Their parents insisted they be treated no differently, and the family learned sign language to communicate.

Marie: The Only Sister

As the only girl in the family, Marie was cherished by her brothers. On her 60th birthday in 2019, they recalled singing outside the hospital when she was born, celebrating the arrival of their sister. Jay described her as being much like their mother, praising her as a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.

Large Families and Legacy

Between the nine siblings, the Osmonds have more than 50 children, continuing their legacy across generations. Alan’s children even formed The Osmond Boys, carrying forward the family’s musical tradition with their own harmonies and performances.

Support Through Hardship

The Osmonds have always rallied around one another during difficult times. Wayne survived a brain tumor in 1994, while Alan was later diagnosed with ALS. When Marie’s son Michael died in 2010, her brothers stood by her side. Tom endured quadruple bypass surgery in 2018, with Donny and Marie asking fans for prayers. He has since recovered.

Wayne’s Passing

On January 1, 2025, Wayne Osmond died at age 73 after suffering a stroke. Donny, Merrill, and Jay shared heartfelt tributes, remembering him as an optimist full of love and laughter. Donny wrote: “Wayne brought so much light, laughter, and love to everyone who knew him. We were fortunate to have Wayne as a brother.”

A Lasting Bond

From their beginnings in Utah to international fame, the Osmonds remain one of America’s most iconic musical families. Donny and Marie’s success was built on the foundation of their brothers’ talent, resilience, and unwavering support.
