Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur has defended the Scuderia’s decision to prioritize preparations for the 2026 Formula 1 regulations, even as the team endures a slump in performance. The move has sparked debate across the paddock, with critics questioning whether the early shift in focus has cost Ferrari valuable ground in the constructors’ championship.
Vasseur revealed that Ferrari redirected resources toward 2026 as early as late April, a strategic gamble that left the team vulnerable in the current season. After a disappointing outing at the Qatar Grand Prix, Ferrari has now mathematically secured fourth place in the standings—a sharp decline after previously battling for second.
The decision to halt development of the SF-25 has not sat well with Ferrari’s drivers. Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton voiced frustration in Losail, reflecting the emotional toll of competing without further upgrades.
Vasseur acknowledged the tension, noting: “It’s a rational decision at the table, but an emotional one when they stand in front of the cameras.” He empathized with the drivers’ efforts, highlighting Leclerc’s determination despite finishing lower than expected.
Vasseur attributed Ferrari’s recent struggles to difficulties in car setup, stressing that small missteps can have major consequences in today’s competitive field. “If we don’t execute well, it can lead to poor qualifying results, which was evident for Max Verstappen in Sao Paulo,” he explained, underscoring the razor-thin margins that define modern F1.
Despite the setbacks, Ferrari remains committed to extracting maximum performance from the remaining races, including the season finale in Abu Dhabi. Vasseur emphasized that precision and execution are more critical than ever as the team balances short-term competitiveness with long-term ambitions under the upcoming regulations.
