Florence Pugh is once again speaking candidly about the scrutiny she faced during her relationship with actor Zach Braff. The Oppenheimer star revealed the painful truth behind the “insane amount of abuse” directed at Braff over their 21-year age difference.
In a recent appearance on the Louis Theroux Podcast, Pugh described the criticism as “unfair” and admitted the backlash left her hurt, ultimately changing how she approaches her private life today.
Pugh has defended Braff publicly multiple times. Most notably, in 2020 she posted a heartfelt Instagram video after a birthday tribute to Braff was met with overwhelming negativity.
“I do not need you to tell me who I should and should not love,” she told critics, calling the online bullying “unnecessary” and “horrid.”
According to Pugh, nearly 70% of the comments on one of her birthday posts for Braff were abusive—and most were directed at him, not her.
She described the experience as “horrible,” explaining that it was painful to watch someone she loved receive such relentless attacks.
Pugh said she felt compelled to step in, calling the online abuse “not fair.” “It was horrible to see someone that you are with receiving that,” she explained, adding that she felt a “smack on the wrist” was necessary for those crossing the line.
Her emotional defense resonated with fans, many of whom praised her for standing up against toxic online behavior.
The backlash has had a lasting impact. Pugh admitted the intense scrutiny made her more private about her relationships moving forward.
She explained that no matter how much you share, people will still comment if your relationship doesn’t fit the image they expect. Fans have noted her shift toward privacy, calling it a “smart and heartfelt choice.”
Despite the criticism, Pugh has remained firm in her stance. “It was me just being allowed to do whatever the fk I wanted to do,” she said, emphasizing her right to choose who she dates.
Pugh and Braff dated for three years, from 2019 to 2022, and have remained on good terms since their separation.
The Florence Pugh Zach Braff age gap story continues to trend because it highlights the emotional toll of fame, love, and online bullying.
One viral fan comment summed it up: “Florence Pugh is proof that love shouldn’t be judged by outsiders—it’s her life, her choice.”
Florence Pugh’s defense of Zach Braff is more than a Hollywood romance—it’s a powerful reminder of resilience, privacy, and the strength it takes to stand up for love in the spotlight.
