The basketball world is mourning the loss of one of its most electrifying talents. Former NBA All-Star Michael Ray “Sugar” Richardson has died at the age of 70 following a battle with prostate cancer, his close friend and attorney John Zelbst confirmed.
Known for his explosive playmaking, relentless defense, and unmistakable swagger, Richardson was one of the most dynamic guards of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Over the course of his career, he suited up for the New York Knicks, Golden State Warriors, and New Jersey Nets, earning four All-Star selections and the 1985 NBA Comeback Player of the Year Award.
Nicknamed “Sugar” for his smooth style on and off the court, Richardson became a fan favorite for his flashy passes and fearless steals. During his prime, he averaged 14.8 points, 7.0 assists, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.6 steals per game, numbers that cemented his reputation as one of the most well-rounded guards of his era.
But his journey wasn’t without turbulence. Richardson’s career was cut short in 1986 after being banned from the NBA following multiple violations of the league’s drug policy. Rather than fade from public view, he used his story as a platform for growth and reflection. In his memoir, “Banned: How I Squandered an All-Star NBA Career Before Finding My Redemption,” Richardson detailed his struggles and eventual recovery — inspiring countless athletes to seek help and honesty.
Despite the challenges, Richardson’s legacy remains one of resilience and renewal. Fans and former teammates have flooded social media with tributes, celebrating his defensive brilliance, infectious personality, and powerful message about second chances.
“Sugar was one of the best I ever played with — fearless, fast, and full of heart,” one former teammate wrote.
Michael Ray Richardson’s story is a reminder that greatness isn’t just about what happens on the court — it’s about the courage to confront life beyond it.
