George Clooney has opened up about one of the biggest near-misses of his career, revealing he still remembers losing out on the role of JD in Ridley Scott’s Thelma & Louise to Brad Pitt.
Speaking to The Times, Clooney admitted the disappointment lingered for decades. “I got to the final test for a role in Thelma & Louise. And Brad got it. The part launched his career in film,” Clooney said, noting that at the time he was still working steadily in television.

The role of JD, a charming drifter who seduces Geena Davis’s Thelma, became Pitt’s breakout performance in 1991. The small but pivotal part catapulted him from TV work into Hollywood stardom, setting the stage for his A-list career.
Clooney confessed he couldn’t bring himself to watch the film for years, though he now acknowledges Pitt was the right choice. “He was perfect for the role,” Clooney admitted.
Geena Davis, who starred as Thelma, recalled the casting process during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show. She revealed that Clooney, Pitt, Mark Ruffalo, and Grant Show were among the final contenders.
“Each one came in, each one was very handsome, they all had brown hair and were very talented,” Davis said. “And then Brad Pitt comes in. He’s so charismatic and so incredibly talented that I was screwing up his audition because I forgot to say my line.”
Despite the early rivalry, Clooney and Pitt went on to form a lasting friendship. The two later starred together in Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s Eleven franchise, cementing their status as Hollywood’s most bankable duo.

While Clooney may still joke about the missed opportunity, the actor has long since established himself as one of Hollywood’s most respected stars, with two Oscars and a career spanning decades. Pitt, meanwhile, continues to thrive as both an actor and producer.
Their shared history remains a reminder of how one role can change the trajectory of a career — and how Hollywood’s biggest stars often start with a single defining moment.
