Ryan Gosling’s reputation for breaking character on Saturday Night Live has become part of his charm, and during his latest hosting gig, he found a partner in crime: Season 51 breakout star Ashley Padilla. The two cracked up repeatedly in sketches that quickly became highlights of the night.
The first sketch featured Gosling alongside Kenan Thompson and Mikey Day as three dimwitted cyclopes. Padilla, playing a guardian of hidden treasure with Veronika Slowikowska, challenged them with riddles. What should have been straightforward answers like “clock” or “wind” devolved into chaos when the cyclopes kept responding with “hat.” Gosling’s character added to the absurdity by repeatedly calling Padilla his wife.
Padilla’s exasperated delivery of lines like “stop” and “go back” triggered Gosling’s laughter, which in turn fueled the audience’s amusement. Her ability to lean into the chaos made the sketch one of the night’s most memorable moments.
Later, Padilla and Gosling teamed up again as a teacher and principal trying to control an unruly classroom. The students began passing notes, with a screen prompt revealing that the contents had been changed since rehearsal.
Padilla read aloud a note about her teacher character seeking makeover tips from ChatGPT, while Gosling’s principal lamented missing 133 basketball shots. Both actors struggled to finish their lines, laughing so hard they had to pause. Padilla eventually closed the sketch with a triumphant “Class dismissed!” to roaring applause.
On The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon just days earlier, Gosling admitted he often gets in trouble for laughing too much on SNL. “You laugh too much. You and Fallon,” he recalled being told. Yet, audiences clearly enjoy these moments, especially when paired with Gosling’s movie-star charisma and Padilla’s rising comedic presence.
Breaking character has long been considered a faux pas on SNL, but when it happens with genuine chemistry, it becomes part of the fun. Gosling and Padilla’s shared laughter brought spontaneity and authenticity to the sketches, reminding viewers that live comedy thrives on unpredictability.
