Greg James to Continue Comic Relief Challenge Despite Father’s Stroke

BBC Radio 1 presenter Greg James has confirmed he will go ahead with his Comic Relief cycling challenge, even as his father recovers from a stroke.

Family Health Struggles

James revealed on Monday’s breakfast show that his father, who recently underwent heart surgery, is “not very well at the moment” but is “still with us.” The 40-year-old DJ took time off last week to be with his family after complications during the procedure.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, James shared that his dad is “fighting hard” and slowly improving. He asked fans to keep “big Al” in their thoughts, adding that life isn’t always smooth sailing but “we’ve got to carry on.”

Comic Relief Challenge

Despite the emotional circumstances, James confirmed he will begin his Comic Relief challenge on Friday. He plans to cycle 630 miles (1,000 km) across the UK on a tandem bike over eight days, starting in Weymouth and finishing in Edinburgh on March 20, coinciding with Red Nose Day.

This will be James’s third major Comic Relief challenge. In 2016, he completed five triathlons in five days, and in 2018, he cycled between Scafell Pike, Snowdon, and Ben Nevis — climbing each peak along the way.

Extra Emotional Journey

James admitted the challenge will now be “extra mad and extra emotional” given his father’s condition. “He really wanted me to do this challenge,” James said. “I’ve been training my tits off, and he knows how much it means to me.”

He also thanked doctors, nurses, and fans for their support. “In times like these it’s so nice to feel the love from people,” he said.

Looking Ahead

While James acknowledged his plans could change if his father’s health worsens, he remains determined to honor his dad’s wishes and raise funds for Comic Relief. The challenge is expected to draw significant attention, not only for its physical demands but also for the emotional strength James is bringing to the journey.
