Hilary Knight Brings Humor to SNL Amid Hockey Gold Medal Spotlight

The U.S. women’s hockey captain Hilary Knight delivered laughs during a surprise appearance on Saturday Night Live, joining teammates and men’s Olympic gold medalists in a lighthearted segment that capped off a week of controversy.

The Appearance

Knight, alongside teammate Megan Keller and men’s team stars Jack and Quinn Hughes, walked on stage during actor Connor Storrie’s opening monologue. Wearing USA jerseys and their gold medals, the athletes received a loud ovation from the studio audience.

Knight opened with a sharp quip: “It was going to be just us, but we thought we’d invite the guys, too.” The joke referenced the recent uproar after President Donald Trump congratulated the men’s team on their Olympic win and suggested he would “have to” invite the women to his State of the Union speech. Knight had previously called Trump’s remarks “distasteful and unfortunate.”

The Backdrop

Both U.S. teams defeated Canada in overtime at the Milan Cortina Games.

  • Jack Hughes scored the men’s winning goal.
  • Megan Keller netted the women’s overtime winner, with Knight tying the game late in regulation.

The women declined Trump’s invitation due to travel logistics, returning home commercially after their victory. The men traveled on a charter flight arranged by the NHL and NHLPA.

More Laughs on Stage

The SNL writers gave Knight another punchline when Quinn Hughes noted the men hadn’t won gold since 1980. Knight quickly countered that the women last won in 2018, drawing laughs and a playful “nice burn” from Jack Hughes. The segment ended with Storrie asking to try on one of the medals. All four players turned in unison and said, “No,” leaving the audience roaring.

Significance

Knight’s appearance underscored the unity between the men’s and women’s teams while spotlighting the women’s achievements. It also showed how athletes can use humor to defuse controversy and reclaim the narrative.
