‘His & Hers’ Ending Explained: Who Is the Killer in Netflix’s Twisted Thriller?

Netflix’s His & Hers keeps viewers guessing until its final moments, stacking suspects and secrets in a Southern town riddled with buried trauma. The limited series, which premiered on January 8, is based on the 2020 novel by Alice Feeney and stars Tessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal as a divorced couple pulled back together by murder. Here’s a clear breakdown of who the killer is, the motive, and how the series ultimately ends.

The Setup: A Town Full of Suspects

His & Hers follows Anna Andrews (Thompson), a national TV news anchor who returns to her hometown of Dahlonega, Georgia, to cover the murder of a former friend. Waiting for her is her estranged husband, Detective Jack Harper (Bernthal), who happens to be leading the investigation. As more women are murdered, nearly everyone becomes a suspect — including Anna and Jack themselves. Each victim shares a connection to Anna’s teenage years, and cryptic clues left on the bodies suggest the killings are personal.

The Victims and the Pattern

Three women are murdered over the course of the series: Rachel, Helen, and Zoe. All were part of Anna’s close-knit high school friend group. The bodies are staged with disturbing symbolism, including friendship bracelets, signaling that the crimes are linked to a shared past. As suspicion bounces between Jack, Anna, and several townspeople, the show pushes viewers toward an obvious conclusion — that Anna herself may be the next target.

The Shocking Truth: Who the Killer Really Is

In the finale, His & Hers delivers its most devastating twist. The murderer is Alice, Anna’s mother, played by Crystal Fox. Years earlier, during Anna’s 16th birthday, Rachel, Helen, and Zoe orchestrated a brutal assault in the woods that left Anna traumatized. Although Anna kept the incident secret, Alice eventually learned the truth — and quietly planned her revenge. Alice murdered the women one by one, believing she was protecting her daughter and restoring justice. She even faked symptoms of dementia to avoid suspicion.

The Framing of Lexy

To ensure she would never be caught, Alice framed Catherine Kelly — later known as Lexy — a former classmate who reinvented herself as a news anchor. Lexy is killed by police during a confrontation, sealing the false narrative that she was the serial killer. In reality, Lexy never murdered anyone. Alice deliberately positioned her as the perfect scapegoat, exploiting Lexy’s own dark past to make the story believable.

Were Anna and Jack Involved?

Despite mounting evidence and personal motives, neither Anna nor Jack committed any of the murders. Their involvement is emotional rather than criminal, rooted in guilt, grief, and unresolved trauma from the death of their infant daughter years earlier.

Do Anna and Jack End Up Together?

Yes. A year after the murders, Anna and Jack reconcile. They move to Atlanta, adopt Jack’s orphaned niece, and prepare to welcome a new baby. On the surface, they appear healed. But the peace is fragile.

The Final, Unsettling Moment

Anna eventually discovers handwritten letters in which Alice confesses everything — the murders, the motive, and the manipulation. Alice admits she wanted her family back and believed the killings were the only way to reunite Anna and Jack. The series ends on an eerie note as Anna locks eyes with her mother, who smiles knowingly. Anna now holds a devastating secret — one that could destroy her rebuilt life if revealed. His & Hers closes not with justice, but with silence — and the chilling suggestion that love, vengeance, and truth don’t always coexist.
