CBS Morning Shock: Hoda Kotb Poised to Take Over as Gayle King Plans Exit

elevision veteran Hoda Kotb is reportedly in talks to take over CBS Mornings as Gayle King prepares to exit the long-running morning program next year. According to Variety and Globe, King’s contract with CBS is set to expire in May 2026, with discussions already underway about her potential shift within the network. The development comes amid a major restructuring at Paramount Skydance, CBS’s parent company, signaling a significant shake-up in the morning television landscape.

On October 30, Variety reported that Gayle King, co-host of CBS Mornings since 2012, may step down as her current contract nears its end. While CBS News stated that “no discussions” have been held regarding her contract renewal, insiders told Globe that internal changes within Paramount Skydance could influence her departure.

Sources close to the network revealed that Bari Weiss, newly appointed editor-in-chief of CBS News, has been in quiet discussions with Hoda Kotb, formerly of NBC’s Today show. The goal, according to insiders, is to bring in a familiar, trusted name who can help CBS compete more aggressively with ABC’s Good Morning America and NBC’s Today.

Inside the Negotiations and Reactions

A source cited by Globe described CBS’s interest in Kotb as strategic:

“Bari wants a huge name who brings warmth, credibility — and viewers. And Hoda checks every box.”

Kotb, 61, stepped away from Today earlier this year to spend more time with her daughters, Haley Joy and Hope Catherine. However, sources say she’s considering a return to her morning show roots, believing that “her real power is mornings.”

A rival television executive added that Weiss’s offer gives Kotb an unprecedented spotlight:

“No Savannah Guthrie, no Kathie Lee Gifford — this time, Hoda would be the face of the show.”

Impact on CBS and Morning TV Landscape

If finalized, Kotb’s addition could reshape the competitive balance among U.S. morning programs. CBS currently trails in third place behind ABC and NBC, and executives are eager for a revival. Analysts suggest Kotb’s reputation for warmth and reliability could help CBS reclaim a larger share of the morning audience.

Gayle King, meanwhile, may transition to a new role within the company — potentially one focused on special programming or network interviews — as part of CBS’s broader content realignment.

What’s Next for Hoda Kotb and CBS

Negotiations with Kotb are still in progress, and her contractual obligations with NBC could pose challenges. Multiple sources note that her existing deal is “not ironclad,” leaving room for maneuvering.

If the move is finalized, CBS is expected to announce the transition early in 2026, positioning Kotb as the lead anchor for the revamped CBS Mornings lineup.
