Hollywood Studios Target ByteDance’s ‘Ultra-Realistic’ AI Tool

Hollywood studios are pushing back against a powerful new AI video generator launched by TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance. The Motion Picture Association (MPA), which represents major studios including Netflix, Disney, Warner Bros Discovery, Sony, Paramount, Universal, and Amazon MGM, has demanded that the tool — Seedance 2.0 — “immediately cease” infringing on copyrighted works.

Viral AI Clips Raise Alarm

Seedance 2.0 can create highly realistic video clips from simple text prompts. Viral examples include Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt fighting, Will Smith battling a spaghetti monster, and Friends characters reimagined as otters. While the technology has impressed users with its lifelike quality, studios argue it violates copyright protections by replicating actors, films, and TV shows without authorization. The MPA’s chairman Charles Rivkin said ByteDance was “disregarding well-established copyright law that protects the rights of creators and underpins millions of American jobs.”

ByteDance Responds

ByteDance stated that the clips were part of a limited pre-launch testing phase and that it has already suspended the ability to upload images of real people. The company added it respects intellectual property rights and is implementing safeguards, monitoring mechanisms, and compliance processes.

Industry Reaction

Hollywood writers and creators voiced concern about the tool’s potential impact. Deadpool writer Rhett Reese warned: “It’s likely over for us,” describing the AI-generated Cruise vs. Pitt video as “so professional” it left him “terrified.” He fears careers could be “decimated” as AI tools mimic high-end production quality. Comedy writer Heather Anne Campbell, known for Saturday Night Live and Rick & Morty, noted that while the tool gives users immense creative control, most outputs resemble fan fiction. “Original ideas are the hardest part,” she wrote, suggesting that AI cannot replace human creativity.

The Bigger Picture

Seedance 2.0 has been billed as delivering “an ultra-realistic immersive experience,” but its debut has sparked widespread debate about the future of entertainment. While fans enjoy experimenting with AI-generated clips, Hollywood sees a looming threat to intellectual property, jobs, and creative industries. The controversy underscores the tension between technological innovation and copyright law — a battle that could reshape the entertainment industry in the years ahead.
