Idris Elba is back on the case. The Luther star is officially set to reprise his iconic role as detective John Luther in a brand-new Netflix film, marking the thrilling return of one of TV’s most complex and beloved antiheroes.
The upcoming movie continues the dark, psychological saga created by Neil Cross, following the success of 2023’s Luther: The Fallen Sun. But this time, fans can expect an even more intense and emotional story — and the return of a fan-favorite villain.
Joining Elba is Ruth Wilson, who will once again step into the shoes of the manipulative and magnetic Alice Morgan — a character whose chemistry with Luther became the soul of the original BBC series. Her absence from The Fallen Sun left fans wanting more, and her comeback is already sparking major excitement online.
Also returning is Dermot Crowley as the dependable Superintendent Schenk, bringing a familiar balance to Luther’s unpredictable world.
The movie will be directed by Jamie Payne, who helmed several episodes of the series and the previous film, while creator Neil Cross returns to write the script — ensuring that the franchise’s signature darkness and depth remain intact.
The story follows Luther as he’s pulled back into duty amid a wave of gruesome, random murders across London. Haunted by his past and surrounded by enemies, he must once again face the question that defines him: How far will he go to stop evil?
Production begins in February, with Chernin Entertainment producing alongside Neil Cross, Idris Elba, Gina Carter, and Tim Lewis.
Elba has called the new film “the darkest and most personal chapter yet,” hinting that this could be a turning point — or the ultimate test — for the detective who’s spent a lifetime chasing monsters.
