Genshin Impact has introduced a long list of antagonists over its five years of storytelling, but few have left a deeper impression than Il Dottore, the 2nd-ranked Fatui Harbinger. The character has sparked intense discussions within the community, dividing players who normally hope for every major character to become playable. For many, Il Dottore stands apart as one of the most terrifying figures in the world of Teyvat — and potentially the true endgame villain of the franchise.
Modern storytelling often portrays villains with sympathetic motivations — characters who walk the blurred line between morality and necessity. Players enjoy adversaries who are complicated, flawed, and relatable. But Il Dottore represents something far more sinister.
Instead of a tragic backstory or a higher calling, Il Dottore acts purely for his own ambitions. His desire to obtain god-level power drives him to conduct horrifying experiments without remorse. This lack of humanity makes him a different breed of antagonist — one whose presence alone can shift the tone of an entire narrative arc.
Born after the Cataclysm and once a Sumeru Akademiya scholar, The Doctor’s early years revealed an obsession with modifying life and reshaping human capability. He pushed boundaries far beyond reason, using human emotions as tools in experiments based on manipulation and betrayal.
One of the most disturbing examples is the tragedy involving Scaramouche at Tatarasuna, where Il Dottore intentionally engineered conflict and emotional suffering. He later exploited Scaramouche’s trust to conduct puppet body research, eventually pushing him toward becoming a false god through the absorption of Lesser Lord Kusanali (Nahida). Once his plans collapsed, he abandoned Scaramouche without hesitation — highlighting his ruthless nature.
Il Dottore’s cruelty isn’t limited to individuals. Throughout Teyvat, countless experiments and disappearances are linked to his influence. Even his fellow Harbingers, including Arlecchino and Sandrone, openly despise and distrust him. At one point, Arlecchino even considered killing him — a testament to his feared reputation.
Il Dottore has already demonstrated unmatched ambition by attempting to seize the power of the three moons during the Nod-Krai Archon quest. His potential power level could place him equal to or beyond the Four Shades. Although Columbina halted his plan temporarily, many believe the confrontation is far from over.
With intellect, strategic mastery, and complete moral detachment, Il Dottore could emerge as the ultimate threat even after conflicts involving Celestia and the Heavenly Principles. Community sentiment further supports this direction — few characters inspire such strong emotional response.
