Russell T Davies’ acclaimed drama It’s a Sin is being reimagined as a theatrical dance production by leading U.K. company Rambert. The adaptation will premiere at Aviva Studios in Manchester, co-produced with Factory International.
Davies will serve as executive producer alongside pop duo Pet Shop Boys and Glyn Fussell. Rambert’s artistic director Benoit Swan Pouffer will choreograph and direct, while Kaite O’Reilly (The Almond and the Seahorse) joins as dramaturg. Roman GianArthur is composing and supervising the music, with Luke Halls Studio handling set and video design.
Set between 1981 and 1991, It’s a Sin follows a group of young gay men and their friends in London as they navigate the devastating HIV/AIDS crisis. The original series, praised for its emotional depth and cultural impact, is now being transformed into a visceral dance narrative.
Davies expressed his excitement, calling the adaptation “one of the greatest honors of my life.” Pouffer emphasized Rambert’s mission of storytelling through movement, noting that the project explores how choreography can carry urgent, emotional narratives.
The production is a collaboration with Wales Millennium Centre, Capital Theatres in Edinburgh, Sadler’s Wells Theatre, and Les Théâtres de la Ville in Luxembourg. Performance dates and casting details will be announced soon. This adaptation marks a bold new chapter for It’s a Sin, blending dance, music, and storytelling to bring its powerful themes to audiences in a fresh, immersive way.
