The Shocking True Story of Jane Andrews, the Royal Dresser Convicted of Murder

BritBox’s new drama The Lady revisits the extraordinary and tragic life of Jane Andrews, once a trusted dresser to Sarah, Duchess of York, whose story spiraled from fairytale beginnings into infamy.

From Working-Class Roots to Buckingham Palace

Born in 1967 in northern England, Andrews grew up in a turbulent household. At 21, she answered an advertisement in The Lady magazine and secured a position as dresser to the Duchess of York. Quickly becoming a confidante, Andrews helped shape the duchess’s public image during a time of intense media scrutiny.

A Glamorous Life, Shadowed by Turmoil

The series portrays Andrews’ transformation from a shy young woman into a polished member of the royal household. Yet beneath the surface, her personal life was marked by insecurity, failed relationships, and destructive behavior. Friends described her as desperate to be loved, while her romantic partners often struggled with her volatility.

The Fatal Relationship

In 1998, Andrews began a relationship with former stockbroker Thomas Cressman. Their bond was fraught with arguments and accusations. Andrews claimed Cressman was abusive, while his friends insisted she was manipulative. In September 2000, after Cressman refused to marry her, tensions escalated. That night, Andrews killed him by striking him with a cricket bat and stabbing him.

Trial and Conviction

Andrews fled but was found by police after an overdose attempt. She was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. Later diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, she admitted responsibility, saying, “I’ve caused all this heartache and grief to so many people and there is absolutely nothing I can do about that.”

Life After Prison

Released in 2015, Andrews faced further legal troubles before being freed again in 2019. Reports in recent years show her working modest jobs, including at a supermarket and an animal hospital. For Cressman’s family, however, the pain endures. His brother remarked, “She’s served her sentence. I can only say she has a life to continue with, but the sentence for me and my family continues for the rest of our lives.”
