Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez are facing increasing public criticism after reports revealed extensive and costly renovations to their luxury estate on Indian Creek Island in Miami—known as “Billionaire Bunker.” The project, which follows their dramatically extravagant $50 million wedding in Italy, has sparked debate about excessive wealth and social inequality amid global economic challenges.
The couple purchased the 12,000-square-foot waterfront mansion in April 2024 for approximately $90 million. Since acquiring the estate, they have undertaken sweeping modifications to nearly every aspect of the property. Although full renovation details have not been disclosed, insiders report that almost all six bedrooms and nine bathrooms are being rebuilt with high-end architectural design, custom materials, and luxury finishes.
The estate includes a range of amenities typical of ultra-wealthy properties—such as a pool, hot tub, sauna, firepit, and private cabana office—but the couple reportedly requested even more extravagant upgrades. Sources say they added a regulation-size pickleball court, installed Botero-inspired sculptures, and hired specialists to transport and plant large mature trees, requiring a professional tree surgeon.
The interior is believed to feature custom flooring, premium furnishings, designer lighting, and advanced smart-home systems. Construction equipment and deliveries have drawn local attention, leading some critics to accuse the family of indulging in excess while others struggle with rising costs of living.
Bezos and Sánchez’s visibility has grown over the past year as they frequently attend global celebrity events—although they famously skipped the 2025 Met Gala to finalize their wedding arrangements in Italy. That event drew protests from Venice residents frustrated by overcrowding and disruptive tourism.
Reports suggest that Jeff Bezos has acquired two additional adjacent properties on the island, bringing his total investment in the neighborhood to approximately $147 million. Plans to demolish the structures and build a larger combined mega-estate have not yet moved forward, but speculation is growing about whether the project could rival or exceed Bezos’ record-setting $165 million mansion in Beverly Hills, California.
Critics argue that the couple’s spending and lifestyle appear increasingly disconnected from widespread economic pressures and calls for philanthropy. Many contrast Bezos’s public image with that of his ex-wife, MacKenzie Scott, who has donated billions of dollars to charities and social programs.
While some supporters defend Bezos’s right to spend freely as a self-made billionaire, others view the renovation as wasteful and tone-deaf during a time of economic hardship for many families. Social media users have also questioned whether public sentiment will continue to shift as the couple expands their lavish real estate portfolio.
Despite heightened scrutiny, Bezos and Sánchez have not publicly commented on the renovations or criticism surrounding their choices.
As construction continues into late 2025, questions remain about how large the expanded estate will become—and whether public pressure will influence future decisions.
