The 2025 Gotham Film Awards nominations are officially out, marking the beginning of the year’s awards season. Jennifer Lawrence, Jacob Elordi and Teyana Taylor have emerged as key frontrunners, earning recognition for their standout performances in independent films. The nominations, announced on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, by the Gotham Film & Media Institute, highlight a year defined by daring creativity and strong storytelling across international and independent cinema.
Leading the field, One Battle After Another received six nominations, the highest this year. Performances by Jennifer Lawrence (Die My Love), Adam Sandler (Jay Kelly), Jacob Elordi (Frankenstein), and Teyana Taylor (One Battle After Another) headline the list, while films like Hamnet, Bugonia, and If I Had Legs I’d Kick You also gained critical recognition.
In the Outstanding Lead Performance category, Lawrence is joined by Rose Byrne, Jessie Buckley, Tessa Thompson, and Amanda Seyfried. The Outstanding Supporting Performance lineup includes Elordi, Adam Sandler, Indya Moore, and Teyana Taylor, along with Alexander and Stellan Skarsgård — the first father-son duo both nominated in the same year.
The Best Feature category spotlights ten titles including Hamnet, East of Wall, One Battle After Another, and Train Dreams, reflecting the wide diversity of themes and filmmaking styles recognized by the Gotham jury.
Jeffrey Sharp, Executive Director of the Gotham Film & Media Institute, emphasized the strength of this year’s field, saying:
“This year’s nominees celebrate an extraordinary year of cinematic achievement — one defined by bold, original storytelling, festival breakouts and filmmakers whose independent vision extends across studios and streamers.”
Critics have particularly praised performances from Jennifer Lawrence, Jacob Elordi and Teyana Taylor, noting their ability to balance emotional vulnerability with artistic innovation — a hallmark of the Gotham Awards’ independent spirit.
Often considered the first major event of the awards calendar, the Gotham Awards are seen as a strong indicator for later honors such as the Golden Globes and the Oscars. The recognition of One Battle After Another and Die My Love positions them as early favorites in several major categories.
For Jennifer Lawrence, the nomination marks a celebrated return to independent cinema. Jacob Elordi continues his rise from breakout roles in Saltburn and Euphoria to award-season prominence, while Teyana Taylor’s nod underscores her growing reputation as both performer and creative force.
The 35th annual Gotham Film Awards will take place on Monday, December 1, 2025, in New York City. Among special honorees are Tessa Thompson (Spotlight Tribute), Guillermo del Toro and Jacob Elordi (Vanguard Tribute), and Noah Baumbach (Director Tribute). The ceremony will be livestreamed globally, officially launching the awards season for 2026.
