Jeremy Allen White is opening up about a moment he describes as transformative in preparing to play Bruce Springsteen on screen. Speaking with Austin Butler for Interview Magazine, the actor recounted a private and unexpectedly intimate meeting with Springsteen last summer at London’s Wembley Stadium—an experience that left a lasting impression as he stepped into the role of The Boss.
Ahead of filming the upcoming biopic, White was invited to attend Springsteen’s soundcheck before a sold‑out show. With only a handful of people present, the actor found himself face‑to‑face with the music icon.
Springsteen spotted him from the stage, walked over, and the two shared a warm handshake. What followed was a twenty‑minute conversation about family, life backstage, and the rhythm of touring—an exchange White described as surprisingly natural and deeply personal.
White remained with Springsteen’s inner circle until the concert began, joined by friends and co‑stars Ayo Edebiri and Molly Gordon. From the wings, he watched as 90,000 fans filled the stadium.
The moment that stayed with White came once the show was underway. Standing offstage with Springsteen’s family and friends, he noticed the singer repeatedly glancing toward the wings.
Initially assuming Springsteen was looking for his wife, Patti Scialfa, White soon realized the rock legend was locking eyes with him—performing directly to him for nearly thirty seconds.
White interpreted the gesture as intentional, a way for Springsteen to give him a “taste” of what it feels like to command a stadium. The Boss repeated the moment twice more throughout the night.
For White, the experience illuminated the addictive energy of live performance and the emotional pull that keeps artists like Springsteen returning to the stage decade after decade.
White says the Wembley encounter became a crucial part of his preparation for Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere, which chronicles a pivotal chapter in Springsteen’s creative journey. The film is set to hit theaters on October 24.
As anticipation builds for the biopic, White continues to share insights into his immersive preparation process. With Springsteen’s blessing and a firsthand glimpse into the world of a rock legend, the actor’s portrayal is already generating significant buzz ahead of the film’s release.
