Jonathan Bailey’s Emotional Casting Story for ‘Wicked’ Leaves Fans in Tears

Casting directors for the highly successful Wicked movie have revealed the extraordinary story behind Jonathan Bailey landing the role of Fiyero — a process driven by instinct, persistence, and unwavering confidence. Bernard Telsey and Tiffany Canfield, who oversaw talent selection for the film, shared how a single meeting convinced them that Bailey was destined to play the beloved character.

The film, directed by Jon M. Chu and starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, has become a global box office hit, with Bailey’s performance drawing widespread praise across audiences and critics.

A Single Meeting Changed Everything

The casting team was already familiar with Jonathan Bailey before auditions even began. His award-winning performance in Company on London’s West End had left a strong impression on both Telsey and Canfield. So when Bailey happened to be in New York, they quickly arranged a general meeting.

According to their interview with PEOPLE, the decision was instantaneous. Telsey said that within minutes of speaking to Bailey, he knew the search for Fiyero was over. He reportedly turned to his colleague and said, “That’s our Fiyero.”

From that moment on, the casting directors were determined to secure him. They pursued Bailey relentlessly — despite widespread belief that he was unavailable due to other commitments. Canfield explained that many people insisted they stop trying, but the pair refused to accept defeat.

“We just wouldn’t take no for an answer,” she said. Their persistence paid off, and Bailey officially signed on for the film.

An Emotional and Unforgettable Milestone

Landing the role has been deeply meaningful for Bailey. During the London premiere of Wicked: Part One, he was visibly emotional, shedding tears as the audience cheered. The moment underscored how personally significant the film has been for him.

Bailey stars alongside Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, forming the central trio of the musical fantasy adaptation. The chemistry among the leads — and Bailey’s powerful stage presence — have been repeatedly highlighted as defining strengths of the movie.

With massive global ticket sales and enthusiastic reviews, Wicked continues to captivate fans, proving that passion-driven decision-making can lead to extraordinary cinematic success.

The story behind Bailey’s casting is now inspiring fans and creatives alike — a reminder that conviction, talent recognition, and persistence can shape unforgettable performances.
