LOS ANGELES — Jordan Peele is now celebrated as one of Hollywood’s most innovative horror directors, but his journey behind the camera began with an unusual turning point: being offered the role of “Poop” in The Emoji Movie.
Peele first rose to fame alongside Keegan-Michael Key in the sketch comedy series Key & Peele, which ran for five seasons until 2015. Two years later, he stunned audiences with Get Out, a psychological thriller that earned him an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. He has since directed acclaimed films like Us and Nope, cementing his reputation as a master of modern horror.
In a 2018 Vanity Fair interview, Peele recalled the bizarre offer. “I was offered the role of Poop… this is true,” he said. Initially, he considered the role but learned it had already gone to Sir Patrick Stewart. Peele’s reaction was decisive: “That’s [expletive] up… I was like, [expletive] this.”
That moment reportedly pushed him to rethink his career trajectory, steering him away from acting roles and toward directing.
The story recently resurfaced online, sparking viral reactions. Many fans joked about the irony of Peele’s career pivot. “Thank you, Patrick Stewart, for taking one for the team,” one Reddit user quipped. Others noted that without The Emoji Movie, audiences might never have seen Get Out or Nope.
While Peele still occasionally lends his voice to projects, his decision to step back from acting opened the door to a groundbreaking directing career. What began as a rejected role in an animated comedy ultimately led to a new chapter in horror filmmaking.
