Judi Dench, one of Britain’s most celebrated actresses, has shared a candid update about her health and career. At 90, the Oscar-winning star revealed that her deteriorating eyesight has made it nearly impossible for her to continue acting, fueling speculation about retirement.
In a joint interview with longtime friend Ian McKellen, Dench told ITV News that her eyesight has left her unable to read scripts or recognize people. “No, you don’t [see me on camera], because I can’t see anymore,” she admitted.
McKellen, 86, joked that he could still see her, prompting Dench to respond warmly: “Yes, and I can see your outline, and I know you so well, in your Macbeth scarf. But I can’t recognize anybody now… I can’t see the television. I can’t see to read.”
She even laughed when McKellen asked if she sometimes greeted strangers as old friends. “Sometimes!” she replied, showing her trademark humor despite the challenges.
Dench, who turns 91 on December 9, has enjoyed a career spanning decades across stage and screen. She has won an Academy Award, a Tony Award, two Golden Globes, six BAFTAs, and seven Olivier Awards.
Her acclaimed performances include Shakespeare in Love, Philomena, and her iconic role as M in the James Bond films starring Daniel Craig.
Dench’s on-screen appearances have slowed significantly. Her last film credit was a cameo in Apple TV+’s 2022 Christmas musical comedy Spirited, alongside Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds. More recently, she appeared in a holiday-themed commercial in the U.K.
She previously hinted at retirement during the Chelsea Flower Show in May 2024, telling reporters she had no upcoming projects: “No, no. I can’t even see!”
Dench has spoken openly about her battle with age-related macular degeneration, a condition that affects central vision. In a 2023 interview with The Daily Mirror’s Notebook, she explained: “I can’t see on a film set anymore. And I can’t see to read. So I can’t see much.”
She admitted that learning long parts is difficult, though she relies on her photographic memory and friends who help her rehearse scripts.
Despite her health challenges, Dench remains active in cultural advocacy. She and McKellen are currently campaigning to revitalize the William Shakespeare curriculum in U.K. schools, ensuring future generations appreciate the playwright’s legacy.
Judi Dench’s honest reflections highlight the realities of aging in the entertainment industry. While her eyesight has limited her ability to perform, her legacy as one of the greatest actors of her generation remains secure. Whether or not she formally retires, Dench’s influence continues through her advocacy, her unforgettable performances, and her enduring bond with audiences worldwide.
