Kaylee Russell, 20, was reported missing on November 30 in Northern Colorado
Her overturned vehicle was discovered submerged in a canal on December 4 in Timnath
The Larimer County Coroner confirmed her cause of death on December 8
Officials ruled the death was caused by blunt force trauma and cold exposure
Investigators have found no evidence of foul play at this stage
Authorities in Colorado have released the official cause of death for 20-year-old Kaylee Russell of Evans, providing long-awaited answers in a case that captured widespread community attention. The Larimer County Coroner’s Office confirmed that Russell died from a combination of crash-related injuries and exposure to freezing temperatures after her vehicle overturned into a canal in Timnath.
Russell was last seen on November 30 at the Loveland/Johnstown Park-n-Ride, where she was dropped off by her father. When she failed to return home later that day, her family reported her missing, prompting an intensive multi-day search across Northern Colorado.
Local law enforcement agencies, volunteer groups, and community members coordinated search efforts as tips poured in from the public. The search continued until December 4, when authorities located Russell’s vehicle upside down and submerged in a water-filled canal near Larimer County Road 1 in Timnath.
On December 8, the Larimer County Coroner’s Office officially confirmed that the body recovered from the submerged vehicle belonged to Russell. The coroner determined she died on the same day she went missing.
According to the report, Russell suffered blunt force injuries from the crash and was also exposed to extreme cold after the vehicle overturned into the canal. Officials said the combination of physical trauma and freezing conditions led to her death. The position of the vehicle and the surrounding water likely accelerated the effects of cold exposure.
The Colorado State Patrol continues to investigate what caused Russell’s vehicle to leave the roadway. Investigators are examining road conditions, vehicle damage, and possible mechanical issues to determine what led to the crash.
At this time, authorities have stated that there is no evidence suggesting foul play or outside involvement. Officials emphasized that the investigation is focused on understanding the circumstances of the accident rather than a criminal act.
Russell’s disappearance and death deeply affected residents across Evans, Loveland, and Timnath. Community members organized search parties, shared information online, and assisted law enforcement throughout the effort.
Officials noted that the canal’s remote location and limited visibility were major factors in why the vehicle was not discovered sooner. Following confirmation of her death, Russell’s family released a public announcement, and an outpouring of condolences followed across the region.
While the cause of death has now been formally established, the broader investigation into how the crash occurred remains active. The Colorado State Patrol is expected to release additional findings once the review of roadway conditions and vehicle data is complete.
Those findings could lead to future safety recommendations for the area near the crash site. For now, the coroner’s report brings critical clarity to the question of how Kaylee Russell died, offering a measure of closure to a grieving family and community.
