Season 29 of The Voice entered its Battle Rounds on March 16, but fans noticed Kelly Clarkson was absent from rehearsals. While Adam Levine and John Legend worked directly with their teams, Clarkson’s artists were guided by her Battle Round mentor, Jennifer Hudson.
Clarkson skipped rehearsals following the death of her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock, who passed away from melanoma in August 2025. The two share two children and divorced in 2020. Clarkson returned to her coach’s chair for the actual competition but admitted she hated missing the prep sessions.
“I really hated that I couldn’t be there for Battle rehearsals, but I got to see the video footage,” Clarkson explained. “J. Hud left these notes for me and things she had the team work on, and it was amazing intel. Nothing beats live music, so that’s what I’m excited about.”
Hudson, a former Voice coach herself, stepped in seamlessly. She provided Clarkson with detailed notes and helped the team polish their performances. Clarkson praised Hudson’s guidance, calling it invaluable.
The Battle Rounds are a critical stage of the competition. Each coach pairs their artists for duets, with one advancing and the other at risk of elimination. Coaches have one Steal and one Save to use strategically. Clarkson also holds a “Super Steal,” earned from winning the Triple Turn competition during Blind Auditions. This powerful advantage allows her to override other coaches’ decisions and secure an artist for her team.
After the Battles, the Knockout Rounds will introduce a new twist: an All-Star Competition. Coaches will bring back two artists from previous seasons to compete in sing-offs. The coach who wins the most sing-offs will gain an extra artist for the finale. Despite her absence from rehearsals, Clarkson’s return to the chair ensures her team remains strong. With Hudson’s mentorship and Clarkson’s Super Steal, her artists are well-positioned for success in the weeks ahead.
