Kyler Murray Injury Update: Cardinals QB Out vs Cowboys — But Could Suit Up as Emergency Backup

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray will not start in tonight’s Monday Night Football clash against the Dallas Cowboys, though he could still be active as an emergency backup. Murray is continuing his recovery from a foot sprain suffered in Week 5 against the Tennessee Titans. Head coach Jonathan Gannon confirmed that veteran Jacoby Brissett will get the starting nod in Dallas.

Murray’s Status and Recovery Progress

Murray, 27, has missed two consecutive games since sustaining the injury in Arizona’s Week 5 loss to the Titans. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, he has made “steady progress” and could be cleared for limited action soon.

Last week, Murray returned to light practice sessions, participating in individual drills and short throws. However, the team’s medical staff listed him as questionable for Week 9 and decided not to rush his return.

Brissett, who has started the last two games, will lead the Cardinals offense once again. In those starts, he’s completed 65% of his passes for 599 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception. Arizona has narrowly lost both games by a combined eight points.

Quotes & Reactions from Cardinals Camp

Head coach Jonathan Gannon provided an update on Murray’s recovery timeline.

“He’s trending in the right direction,” Gannon told reporters on Sunday. “We’re encouraged by his progress, but we want to be smart with him. The last thing we want is a setback on the road.”

The decision underscores Arizona’s cautious approach, particularly with the team returning from its Week 8 bye and entering a crucial stretch of the NFC West schedule.

Impact on the Cardinals’ Offense

Without Murray’s trademark mobility, the Cardinals’ offense has shifted toward a more conservative play style under Brissett. The team has emphasized quick passes and reduced rollouts to protect against turnovers.

Running back Trey Benson’s hamstring recovery will also influence the offensive rhythm. Arizona’s pass-heavy approach may continue against Dallas’s aggressive defensive front, which ranks among the top five in quarterback pressures.

Analysts note that Murray’s return would add a dual-threat dimension — one the Cardinals have sorely missed.

What’s Next for Kyler Murray and Arizona

If his recovery continues smoothly, Kyler Murray could reclaim the starting role in Week 10 against the Seattle Seahawks. The Cardinals hope his return will boost their playoff chances as they aim to stay competitive in the NFC West standings.

For tonight, expect Brissett to lead the offense in the Monday Night Football matchup at AT&T Stadium, with Murray possibly active on the sidelines in an emergency capacity.
