‘The Last Frontier’ Finale Was Nearly Completely Different — Showrunner Explains

Apple TV+ thriller The Last Frontier has wrapped its first season with an explosive finale — but fans may be surprised to learn that the series initially had a very different ending in development. Showrunner Jon Bokenkamp revealed in a new interview that the dramatic Season 1 twist involving rogue CIA operative Sidney Scofield was originally supposed to appear in the final moments rather than earlier in the season.

The series, set in remote Alaska, follows U.S. Marshal Frank Remnick (Jason Clarke) as he navigates a violent prison break, government secrets, and high-stakes betrayals. Across ten tense episodes, the story uncovers the truth behind a plane crash that freed dangerous convicts — a disaster orchestrated by Scofield, played by Haley Bennett.

While the season’s twist delivered major shock value in Episode 8 through an extended flashback, Bokenkamp explained that the writing team first considered holding the reveal until the finale.

Why the original finale was changed

Bokenkamp said he wanted the twist to land with impact but not feel like a cheap cliffhanger. The creative team ultimately realized that saving the reveal for the final scene would sacrifice emotional fallout and limit storytelling space.

“We originally were thinking that might be the end of the season — ‘Oh my God, she walks out and we realize she’s behind all this?’” Bokenkamp told /Film.
“But then, as a TV show, that felt gimmicky… as opposed to giving the audience full resolution and living with the fallout for two or three more episodes.”

By revealing Sidney’s role sooner, the show shifts from shock factor to exploring consequences — moral conflict, sacrifice, and betrayal — across the remaining episodes.

Built for rewatching

The showrunner emphasized that The Last Frontier is designed to reward viewers who revisit the season with more context. Once the audience knows Sidney’s secret, earlier scenes become layered with hidden meaning.

“If you watch it again, you do see things that they’re saying… she’s playing fair the whole time, she’s just withholding information like a good spy,” Bokenkamp said.

The twist recontextualizes Scofield’s decisions — including sacrificing her lover Havlock (Dominic Cooper) in the plane crash — as part of her covert mission authorized by CIA superior Jacqueline Bradford (Alfre Woodard).

While The Last Frontier’s finale sparked debate among viewers, critics praise the series for prioritizing character-driven storytelling over shock value. The finale keeps the emotional stakes high, balancing thrilling action with moral ambiguity and personal reckoning.
