Broadway fans are buzzing after a jaw-dropping revival of the musical Chess officially opened at the Imperial Theatre on November 16, 2025.
Led by Lea Michele and Aaron Tveit, the bold new production has already left audiences emotional and speechless, thanks to its fresh book, lavish staging, and powerhouse performances.
This revival marks the first major Broadway return of Chess since its short-lived 1988 production.
The show stars Aaron Tveit as American grandmaster Freddie Trumper, Lea Michele as Florence Vassey, and Nicholas Christopher as Soviet rival Anatoly Sergievsky.
Directed by Tony winner Michael Mayer, the production reunites him with Michele after their collaborations on Funny Girl and Spring Awakening.
The revival features a completely new book by Emmy winner Danny Strong, paired with the legendary score by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus of ABBA, alongside EGOT winner Tim Rice.
Audiences have called the revival “emotional” and “jaw-dropping,” praising Michele’s heartfelt vocals and Tveit’s commanding stage presence.
One fan wrote: “Lea Michele leaves me speechless — her voice in Chess is pure Broadway magic.” Another added: “Aaron Tveit shocks with a performance that feels both bold and timeless.”
The revival arrives at a time when Broadway is embracing bold reinterpretations of classics.
With previews beginning October 15 and the run extended through May 3, 2026, Chess has already become one of the most viral tickets in New York City.
Beyond its lavish staging, the revival underscores Broadway’s emotional power to reinvent beloved works for new generations.
By blending nostalgia with bold new storytelling, Chess proves that Broadway can still shock, inspire, and leave fans speechless.
With Lea Michele and Aaron Tveit leading the charge, Broadway’s Chess revival is a bold, emotional triumph — one that cements its place as a cultural phenomenon.
