Lisa McGee Brings Dark Humor to New Netflix Series How to Get to Heaven from Belfast

Award-winning writer Lisa McGee, best known for creating the global hit Derry Girls, is back with a new project that blends mystery, comedy, and the unique humor of Northern Ireland. Her latest series, How to Get to Heaven from Belfast, will premiere on Netflix on February 12.

A Funeral That Sparks Adventure

The show begins with three childhood friends reuniting after the death of a close companion. What starts as a wake quickly turns into something far more unexpected. “They go to her wake but all is not what it seems, and they get pulled into an eerie, creepy adventure that takes them all over Ireland and beyond,” McGee explained.

While the premise may sound grim, McGee insists the series is “essentially a murder mystery, but funny.” Much like Derry Girls, which found humor amid the backdrop of The Troubles, her new series aims to balance darker themes with sharp wit and relatable characters.

A Dark Northern Irish Sense of Humor

At the heart of the show is Belfast itself, with McGee drawing inspiration from the city’s distinctive humor. “Some of the themes are darker and it’s definitely a bit of a genre switch up,” she said.

The series stars Sinéad Keenan as Robyn, Caoilfhionn Dunne as Dara, and Róisín Gallagher as Saoirse. Each character reflects different stages of life, from motherhood to career struggles, echoing McGee’s own experiences.

Personal Inspiration

McGee revealed that her relationships and personal life shaped the narrative. “We’re all at that stage where we’re mums, or facing things in our careers, or maybe caring for parents. So it was about giving three women at a certain stage in their life a chance to go on one last adventure.”

She sympathized most with Saoirse, saying her career frustrations mirrored her own. “I have two boys, Robyn has three, I loved the chance to write about some of the stresses and frustrations of being a mum.”

Following Derry Girls

After the massive success of Derry Girls, McGee admitted she feels pressure to deliver. “People here really tell you what they think. I want to do people proud and do a real truthful representation.”

She recalled the nerves she felt before airing the final episode of Derry Girls, which centered on the Good Friday Agreement. “Nothing could compare to that,” she said. “I love this new show and I hope other people do.” With its mix of comedy, mystery, and heartfelt storytelling, How to Get to Heaven from Belfast is set to be one of Netflix’s most intriguing releases of 2026.
