Veteran actress Jill Freud, best known for her role as the housekeeper in the beloved film Love Actually, has passed away at the age of 98. Her daughter, Emma Freud, confirmed the heartbreaking news, sharing that her mother died peacefully while surrounded by family.
Emma revealed that Jill took her “final bow” after an evening spent with loved ones. The family shared pizza together before her passing, cherishing the warmth of their last moments.
Reflecting her trademark wit, Jill humorously told everyone to “f* off” so she could rest. Her final words were “I love you,” a testament to the deep bond she shared with her family until the very end.
Jill Freud’s acting career spanned decades, leaving a lasting mark on British theatre and film. Her role in Love Actually (2003) was her final screen appearance, where she played part of the Prime Minister’s household staff.
Born on April 22, 1927, Jill lived a remarkable life. During World War II, she was evacuated to Oxford at age 16, where she lived with writer C.S. Lewis and his companion Jane Moore. Lewis later drew inspiration from Jill to create the character Lucy Pevensie in The Chronicles of Narnia.
After her time with Lewis, Jill studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, with Lewis covering her tuition. She began her career on the West End under the name Jill Raymond before marrying into the Freud family in 1950.
In 1980, she founded Jill Freud and Company, managing repertory theatre companies across Suffolk for more than three decades. Emma highlighted her mother’s dedication to regional theatre and her commitment to supporting performers’ welfare.
Even in her later years, Jill remained active and vibrant. At 93, she participated in daily tap dancing classes while living with her family, embodying her lifelong passion for the arts.
Jill Freud’s life was filled with love, laughter, and creativity. Her contributions to theatre and film, along with her inspiring personal journey, will continue to resonate with audiences and performers alike.
