Maggie Gyllenhaal has revealed that she toned down some of the violence in her upcoming film The Bride! following feedback from test audiences and studio executives.
The actress-turned-director explained on The New York Times’ The Interview podcast that Warner Bros. requested changes after screenings raised concerns about the level of violence.
“Because it’s a big studio movie, we tested and tested it,” Gyllenhaal said. “One of the things that they brought up was the violence: Is it too violent?”
She noted that Warner Bros. executives asked her to remove certain scenes, resulting in a final cut that is “a little bit pulled back from what was originally in the movie.”
Pamela Abdy, Warner Bros. co-chair and CEO, reportedly told Gyllenhaal that one particular moment went too far. The director recalled Abdy saying: “Maggie, you cannot have Frankenstein lick black vomit off the Bride’s neck. It’s just too much.”
While Gyllenhaal understood the reasoning, she emphasized that her intention was to ensure every death in the film carried weight and consequence, avoiding gratuitous violence.
The filmmaker also addressed her decision to include depictions of sexual violence, acknowledging criticism but insisting on its importance.
“Wildly disturbing brutality against women is a major reality in the world we’re living in,” she said. “If we’re going to see it, we need to see it in a way that is very hard to watch, because it is very awful.”
The Bride! stars Christian Bale as Frankenstein and Jessie Buckley as his Bride. Set in 1930s Chicago, the film follows the pair on a violent lovers-on-the-run crime spree.
This marks Gyllenhaal’s first studio project after her acclaimed 2021 independent film The Lost Daughter. She admitted that navigating studio intervention was “difficult, but not in a bad way,” describing the process as new and eye-opening.
Despite the edits, anticipation remains high for The Bride!, which will be released in cinemas this Friday. The film is expected to spark conversation not only for its performances but also for Gyllenhaal’s bold approach to storytelling within the studio system.
