Lee Isaac Chung, director of Twisters and Minari, has stepped away from Margot Robbie’s Ocean’s Eleven prequel. Warner Bros. confirmed the departure, citing “creative differences” as the reason for the split.
In a joint statement, Warner Bros. and Robbie’s LuckyChap banner praised Chung’s talent, calling him “a singular filmmaking voice” and expressing enthusiasm for future collaborations. The split was described as amicable, though it marks another setback for the project.
Chung is the second filmmaker to exit the prequel. Jay Roach (Austin Powers, Meet the Parents) left the project in July 2025. The repeated changes highlight the challenges of shaping a new installment in the beloved heist franchise.
Carrie Solomon is writing the screenplay, which is rumored to feature Bradley Cooper alongside Robbie. Plot details remain under wraps, but the film is expected to explore events leading up to Steven Soderbergh’s 2001 Ocean’s Eleven, itself a remake of the 1960 Rat Pack classic.
The 2001 film, starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, and Matt Damon, spawned two sequels and the female-led Ocean’s Eight with Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, and Anne Hathaway. Robbie’s prequel aims to expand the franchise’s universe while offering a fresh perspective.
Alongside Robbie’s prequel, a sequel featuring much of the original cast is also in development. Clooney revealed last year that a script was ready and filming was targeted for 2026. However, Warner Bros.’ pending sale to Paramount Skydance casts uncertainty over the studio’s upcoming slate.
Despite the director shake-up, Robbie remains committed to the project as both star and producer. With her LuckyChap team behind the film, industry watchers expect updates soon on who will take over directing duties.
