Marshals Continues Yellowstone’s Most Depressing Trend

The Yellowstone franchise has never shied away from tragedy, but its latest spin-off, Marshals, seems to double down on one of its most repetitive tropes: doomed romances. Episode 1, “Piya Wiconi,” confirms that Monica Dutton has died — and not peacefully. While details remain unclear, the revelation ends her long-running relationship with Kayce, leaving fans frustrated at yet another heartbreaking storyline.

A Franchise Built on Tragedy

From Yellowstone to 1883 and 1923, the saga has consistently leaned into tragic love stories. John Dutton mourns his wife throughout the original series. Elsa Dutton dies before settling down with Sam, while her first love Ennis is killed by bandits. In 1923, Alexandra freezes to death just as she reunites with Jack, and Elizabeth Strafford loses her partner in battle. Even Teonna Rainwater’s romance ends in sorrow when Runs His Horse dies protecting her.

Monica’s Death Hits Different

Unlike earlier spin-offs, Monica’s demise feels abrupt. Yellowstone season 5 ended with hope for her and Kayce, only for Marshals to erase that progress off-screen. Whether Kelsey Asbille chose not to return or the writers opted for shock value, the decision undermines years of character development. Fans argue that tragedy doesn’t always need to punctuate stories about danger and survival.

Repetition or Character Growth?

While the franchise’s reliance on doomed couples risks becoming predictable, Monica’s death could serve as a turning point for Kayce. His grief may fuel a deeper character arc, exploring resilience and purpose beyond romance. Still, the pattern raises concerns about whether future spin-offs will continue recycling heartbreak rather than offering fresh narratives.

The Bigger Picture

Despite its flaws, Marshals has been praised as one of the strongest Yellowstone projects since the original’s early seasons. Yet, the franchise’s tendency to kill off beloved characters leaves audiences questioning whether Taylor Sheridan’s saga has grown too reliant on tragedy. For now, fans remain invested — but wary of what fate awaits the remaining Duttons.
