Hollywood is mourning the loss of one of its most respected behind-the-scenes talents.
Mary Cybulski, the renowned script supervisor and set photographer whose career spanned more than three decades, passed away on November 8, 2025, at the age of 70 due to glioblastoma multiforme.
Cybulski’s jaw-dropping résumé includes work on films like Life of Pi (2012), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), Syriana (2005), Michael Clayton (2007), The Ice Storm (1997), and Synecdoche, New York (2008).
Her organizational skills and creative input made her a sought-after collaborator for acclaimed directors including Ang Lee, Charlie Kaufman, Michel Gondry, and Tony Gilroy.
Director Ang Lee described her as having a combination of “warmth and courage, and, of course, talent.”
Charlie Kaufman recalled her presence during the chaotic production of Synecdoche, New York, calling her a “calm, clear presence at the center of a confusing storm.”
In 2014, Cybulski authored Beyond Continuity: Script Supervising for the Modern Filmmaker, a definitive guide that became a staple for aspiring filmmakers.
Later, she transitioned into a career as a unit stills photographer, working with directors like Martin Scorsese and Todd Haynes, proving her versatility and emotional dedication to storytelling.
News of her passing sparked heartfelt tributes across social media.
One admirer wrote: “Her work shaped some of the most jaw-dropping films of our time. Hollywood lost a legend.” Another added: “Mary Cybulski leaves fans speechless — her legacy is eternal.”
Cybulski is survived by her husband, a professor at the NYU film school, and her two children.
She was preceded in death by her wife Deon and daughter Charmaine, making her loss even more emotional for those closest to her.
