Melanie Martinez Declares “Cry Baby Is Dead” With Bold New Single “POSSESSION”

Melanie Martinez has officially entered a new era. The alt-pop star unveiled her latest single, “POSSESSION,” a raw rock-driven track that marks a dramatic departure from her Cry Baby persona. The surprise release arrived with a striking statement: “Cry Baby is dead.” For fans, it signals the end of the whimsical character Martinez introduced in her 2015 debut album and the beginning of a darker, more confrontational chapter.

A Haunting New Sound

“POSSESSION” blends edgy rock instrumentation with Martinez’s signature satirical storytelling. Warner Music described the track as “haunting, satirical and spotlighting Melanie’s trademark blend of charm, mischief and bite.” The lyrics tackle domestic violence head-on, painting a vivid picture of toxic relationships. Martinez sings: “He leaves me all alone, from dusk to f—in’ dawn… He comes home drunk at night, of course he picks a fight.” The song strips away illusions of love, exposing how power can masquerade as affection.

From Cry Baby to Global Phenomenon

Martinez first rose to fame in 2012 on season three of The Voice. Though she didn’t win, her career skyrocketed. She has since amassed over 30 billion streams, 5.5 billion YouTube views, and 62 million followers across platforms. Her debut album Cry Baby peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 and spawned a cult following. The project extended beyond music, inspiring a perfume line that sold out upon release. In 2023, Martinez partnered with Flower Shop Perfume to expand her brand into candles, sprays, and pendants.

Success of Portals and The Trilogy Tour

Her last album, Portals (2023), reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and topped Australia’s ARIA Chart. The project cemented her reputation as a boundary-pushing artist. In 2024, Martinez launched her first global arena trek, The Trilogy Tour, selling out Madison Square Garden and performing at major festivals including Lollapalooza in Chicago and Corona Capital in Mexico City.

A New World Order

With “POSSESSION,” Martinez signals a bold reinvention. The Cry Baby era, defined by pastel visuals and surreal storytelling, has given way to a rawer, rock-infused sound. “Welcome to Melanie Martinez’s new world order,” her team declared. Fans can expect more music that confronts uncomfortable truths while maintaining her signature theatrical flair. If “POSSESSION” is any indication, Martinez’s next chapter will be fearless, unflinching, and impossible to ignore.
