A Missy Piggy movie is officially in early development, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Academy Award winners Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone confirmed they are producing the project, signaling a fresh chapter for the beloved Muppet icon. Lawrence shared the news during a recent appearance on the Las Culturistas podcast, noting that Cole Escola is set to write the screenplay. The film is currently untitled and does not yet have a release window.
The Missy Piggy movie marks the first standalone feature centered on the iconic Muppet character. The project was revealed on November 6, 2025, by Jennifer Lawrence, who stated that she and Emma Stone are collaborating as producers. Lawrence confirmed that comedian and actor Cole Escola, known for Oh, Mary!, is attached as the screenwriter.
While production details remain under wraps, the film is expected to highlight Miss Piggy’s rise to stardom — continuing the character’s legacy that began with The Muppet Show in the 1970s. The development follows Disney’s continued expansion of The Muppets brand, which was originally created by Jim Henson and acquired by The Walt Disney Company in 2004.
“I don’t know if I can announce this, but I’m just gonna,” Lawrence said on Las Culturistas. “Emma Stone and I are producing a Miss Piggy movie, and Cole [Escola] is writing it.”
When asked if the two stars would appear in the movie, Lawrence added, “I think so. We have to.”
Industry insiders have praised the move, noting that Stone and Lawrence’s involvement could boost the project’s commercial and critical appeal. A senior production analyst at THR commented, “With two of Hollywood’s most bankable names attached, the Missy Piggy movie could revive audience interest in the Muppet franchise.”
The announcement arrives amid renewed momentum for The Muppets, with Seth Rogen currently developing a Muppet Show revival for Disney+. Featuring pop star Sabrina Carpenter, that series could set the tone for the franchise’s future audience.
For Disney, the Missy Piggy movie represents a strategic opportunity to strengthen its family entertainment portfolio while tapping into nostalgia for legacy characters. Analysts suggest that the project could also pave the way for new merchandising, theme park tie-ins, and streaming partnerships.
While no release date or production start has been confirmed, Lawrence hinted that she and Stone “have to” appear onscreen. Development updates are expected following the premiere of Lawrence’s latest film, Die My Love, later this week.
Further details on casting, direction, and distribution are expected to be announced by The Walt Disney Company in early 2026.
