A tragic shooting near the White House has claimed the life of Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, a 20-year-old member of the West Virginia National Guard. Beckstrom died from her injuries on Thursday, one day after she and another guardsman were shot just blocks from the presidential residence in Washington, D.C.
President Donald Trump confirmed her death, noting that a second service member, Specialist Andrew Wolfe, 24, remains in critical condition. The suspect, identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, is also hospitalized in serious condition.
According to officials and a Reuters report, Beckstrom and Wolfe were conducting a standard patrol assignment when the gunman opened fire the day before Thanksgiving. The sudden attack sent shockwaves through the capital and raised immediate questions about security in the area surrounding the White House.
President Trump was not in the building at the time of the shooting.
West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey issued a statement mourning Beckstrom’s death, calling her a soldier “of extraordinary resolve, courage, and devotion to duty.” He emphasized her service record and the sacrifice she made while protecting the nation.
The governor ordered state flags lowered to half-staff in her honor.
Federal authorities identified the shooter as Lakanwal, an Afghan national who reportedly entered the United States in 2021 through a refugee admissions program. That detail quickly ignited political conflict on Capitol Hill and across media platforms.
President Trump criticized the previous administration for allowing the suspect into the country, calling the incident “a catastrophic failure of immigration vetting.” At a press briefing, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed that terrorism-related charges are under consideration as the investigation progresses.
The shooting has renewed heated discussions over refugee screening procedures and national security preparedness.
Beckstrom’s death has prompted messages of support and sorrow from military leaders and the public. Images and tributes honoring her service have circulated widely across social media platforms, with many calling her a dedicated young soldier whose future was cut short.
The investigation into the motive and circumstances remains active. Officials say additional updates will be released once more evidence is reviewed.
For now, the country mourns a member of the armed forces who lost her life in the line of duty — a reminder of the risks faced by those protecting the nation daily.
