Nick Frost Faces His Own Death in Corin Hardy’s Terrifying New Horror

Corin Hardy, the filmmaker behind The Nun and Gangs of London, has opened up about casting Nick Frost in his new horror film Whistle. Hardy admitted he didn’t want to “get too excited” when offering Frost the role, fearing the actor might turn it down.

A Longtime Fan

Hardy explained that he had admired Frost since his early days working with Edgar Wright on Spaced. “I’ve always been a fan, always wondered, you know, like, ‘Oh, I wonder if I can get Nick in something?’” Hardy said. When the opportunity came with Whistle, he cautiously reached out. To his delight, Frost accepted, arriving in Canada the night before filming began.

Frost as Mr. Craven

In Whistle, Frost plays Mr. Craven, a teacher caught up in a terrifying curse. Hardy praised Frost’s ability to balance horror with subtle humor: “It was great to have him and he brings a certain levity to it which the character needed as well… He’s got some very subtle comedic moments.”

The Horror Concept

The film follows a group of high school students who discover an ancient Aztec death whistle. When blown, the whistle summons their future deaths to hunt them down. Hardy revealed that much of the cast, including Dafne Keen and Sophie Nélisse, had to portray both themselves and their future deaths. To achieve this, doubles were used in full-body prosthetics. Even Frost had a double cast to match his bone structure, allowing prosthetics to transform the likeness into a chilling version of his “future death.” Hardy explained: “It’s fine when you read the script and it’s like, ‘Their death is doing something to them,’ but that means you do have to have someone who looks just like them in some way.”

Release Date

Whistle is set to premiere in U.K. and Irish cinemas on Friday, February 13. With its mix of supernatural horror, dark humor, and inventive casting, Hardy’s latest project promises to deliver a unique cinematic experience.
